When we went to see the home in Perkiomenville, we knew a Carrier ductless system was an option. But, so were other standard HVAC systems.
So, why should the homeowners, who already had ductwork in the house for central air conditioning, consider a mini-split?
One word: Efficiency. Traditional oil boiler systems heat water that’s pumped up to baseboards throughout a home.
Older boilers can have an efficiency as low as 50% depending on the age of the system, meaning you are spending a lot of money to turn the fuel – oil- into comfort you can enjoy.
Even in ducted systems, Energy.Gov reports that a system can lose up to 30% of its heating and cooling through the ductwork alone.
By contrast, mini-split systems combine an outdoor heat pump condenser, pictured below, with indoor, wall-mounted distribution units. These are nearly 100% efficient, and they can deliver you the comfort you want, right where you want it most.
Carrier systems like this can provide-state-of-the-art, zoned heating and cooling wherever they are located. Each indoor unit can be individually controlled, creating a separate zone wherever they are installed.
For this home in Perkiomenville, we helped design a system that would provide six separate zones of comfort throughout the house.
Each outdoor unit can control up to nine individual indoor units, but the experts need to size the indoor and outdoor units correctly to make sure you get the maximum heating and cooling you need to maintain perfect comfort year-round.

For this home, the owner was really concerned about the second floor, where the bedrooms were just too hot in the summer, causing everyone to wake up sweaty and in a bad mood — and that’s not good for anyone.
That’s part of the reason the homeowners opted for two outdoor condenser units- to make sure the first and second floors both got the full comfort they needed, even on the coldest or hottest days of the year.
For the second floor, we knew each of the three bedrooms should have their own zone of comfort.
Each of the wall-mounted units, sometimes called heads or cassettes, can be individually controlled by a handheld remote.
That means when your teenager wants it extra cozy in the winter, they can adjust the heat in their room, without driving Mom and Dad crazy down the hall, who want it a little cooler to sleep soundly throughout the night.
Likewise, if Mom and Dad get up and notice the room is too cold on a frosty fall morning, they can even adjust the temperature before they get out of bed, making sure they’ll never have to dance across a cold floor while getting ready in the morning.
The units can also be put in power-saving mode or even turned off when the room isn’t occupied, making sure you’re never paying for heating and cooling rooms that aren’t in use.

On the first floor, we helped the homeowners design a system with three wall-mounted units that would keep the first-floor family gathering areas including the kitchen, family room and main areas comfortable year-round as well.
All of Carrier’s wall-mounted units are equipped with state of the art sensors. They monitor both the temperature and humidity in a room and evenly distribute heated or cooled air evenly throughout a space.
This eliminates the hot and cold spots many houses get with other HVAC heating and cooling systems.
And just like upstairs, these systems can be controlled from handheld remotes or, if you like, from wall mounted thermostats as well.

And, by adding a smart thermostat, you can even make adjustments when you’re not home, helping you save even more on energy bills while ensuring your home is perfectly comfortable the moment you walk in the door.
