Unless you’ve been on ice since the early 1980s, you know that paper, aluminum, plastic, and glass are common recyclables. But these are far from the only things that can or should be recycled. What about major appliances? Often, these can be used for parts. How about that worn out HVAC system you’re about to replace? Chances are, your old HVAC is too outdated to be much good as scrap for parts. Fortunately, you have a number of options when it comes to scrapping your old air treatment unit.
You can turn in your used HVAC at most recycling centers. Call ahead and ask your local public works or hazardous waste facility for your best options. Most often, disposing of an HVAC will require the removal of certain hazardous liquids and materials that could be dangerous to humans and animals or damage the environment. Once the refrigerants are safely removed, the unit can be dissembled, scrapped and re-purposed or recycled.
Another option is to call your local recycling center and ask if they can handle large pieces of equipment like cooling towers, generators, and the like. If they are able to process items like these, they can probably take your old HVAC. Some organizations will charge large fees for this kind of work, so it’s a good idea to look at all of your options before making a choice.
Sometimes electric utility companies will offer a rebate or bounty program for large appliances. Appliances usually have to meet specific standards. For example, they may require that it still be functional or meet certain size specifications. If you determine that your heating unit meets their standards, you can then talk about a drop-off.
Other options include selling or donating your unit. Charitable organizations may be willing to take it if it’s in good enough condition. You may simply give the unit to a friend, or turn it over to a company that deals with scrap metal.
