Your cooling system is crucial to your comfort over the summer, and in order to keep it running efficiently, it might be necessary to make repairs. If you’re frequently spending money on maintenance, it could be more cost-effective to replace your unit, especially if it falls into one of the following categories:
- Your unit is 10-15 years old. According to Energy Star, a cooling system that is over 10 years old begins to lose efficiency. If your model is this old, it may not even be an energy-efficient model. Be sure to replace it with a certified unit that will save you money and have a smaller impact on the environment.
- It uses R22 Freon. Check the information plate on your outdoor unit or take a look at the owner’s manual to find out what kind of freon your system uses. R22 Freon is being phased out by the U.S. Government because of the harm it can do to the environment. By 2020, it will no longer be in production, and up until then, its price will only continue to rise. New cooling units use R410A, a refrigerant that is easier on the ozone layer and also more efficient for your home.
- It always seems to be running. If your cooling unit never takes a break but still fails to cool your house down, it may be time for a replacement. This problem may also be evident in unusually high utility bills. It’s likely that your unit is failing, or that there are ductwork and insulation problems.
- It makes strange noises. An efficient cooling system unit should run almost silently, so if you’re hearing noises that you’ve never noticed before, it’s not a good sign. It may be that your unit is the wrong size for your home’s ductwork. In that case, a new system might be the best and most efficient option.
- It increases humidity in your home. This likely means that your cooling unit is the wrong size for your home. If it’s too small, then it can’t handle the task of pulling all the moisture from the air in your home. If it’s too large, then it’s cooling your home very quickly, but never gets to run long enough to pull all of the moisture out of the air. You need to find a unit that’s the right size not only to cool your home, but also to ensure that the air is comfortable and healthy.
